Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL)

 

Here at ELK CASTLE SHOOTING SPORTS we are a full service gun store. We offer state certified Concealed Handgun License Training.

This course includes classroom and range time to demonstrate proficiency with your hand gun as required by the State Of Texas.

To apply for a Texas CHL, you must be ·

• A legal resident of Texas.
• 21 years of age.
• Capable of legally purchasing a handgun
under the “Brady Bill”.
• Not chemically dependant or of unsound mind.
• Never convicted of a felony, in any state, at anytime.
• Not convicted of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor within the past five (5) years. (This includes DWI arrests or convictions.)
• Not subject to a restraining or protective order.
• Not delinquent in the payment of
1. Taxes
2. Child Support
3. Other money collected by the state

If you meet this criteria and wish to apply for a concealed handgun license, you can start the process by

• Applying online at www.texasonline.com
• Pick up a Request for Application form here at ELK Castle.
• Go to any Department of Public Safety(DPS) Barracks and ask for a Request for Application card.

FEES

NEW LICENSE:
Class Fee: $99.00 for a new student $85.00 for a renewal student
State Fee: $140.00 for all new students under the age of 60 for a four year license. $70.00 for all renewal students and persons 60 years of age and older.

RESERVATIONS

A $50.00 deposit is required (cash or checks only) to reserve your seat in the class. FAILURE to show up for the class or notify us of a cancellation 72 hours prior to class date will result in the forfeiture of your deposit.

The fees cover all of the requirements necessary to complete and mail the packages to the CHL licensing section.

In order to obtain your Texas CHL, there is a written exam at the end of the classroom phase. You must achieve a minimum of 70% on the final test. (You will have three (3) attempts to pass)

You will also be required to demonstrate your proficiency on the shooting range. Each student will fire fifty(50) rounds and must achieve at least 70% on the proficiency test. Qualification must be with a .32 caliber firearm or larger.

If you believe you will have difficulty passing the proficiency test, you may want to consider enrolling in a BASIC SHOOTING SKILLS course. These courses are available here.

Private CHL classes may be arranged for $125.00 per student (minimum 8 students), instructors are available to come to your location.(Based on location, an extra fuel charge may apply)
